The author states that most of these appeals are unsuccessful due to the fact that court reports are written in English only, and that the only way to assess the accuracy of an interpretation is to have the entire trial on audio tape. Throughout the book the author has provided numerous examples, derived from her observations in court and from the subsequent studying of transcribed tapes, as well as examples of linguistic aspects of both Spanish and English.

There is substantial overlapping of information and a wide range of statistical information, none of which is to be considered a flaw, but rather an attempt to clarify and exemplify certain points that might otherwise seem obscure. The number of typographical errors is insignificant and does not detract from the quality of the text as a whole. Although the book is intended primarily for those directly connected with Court Interpreting, including attorneys and judges, anyone interested in sociolinguistics, the mechanics of language and language manipulation of any sort would benefit from the findings here presented.

Poco a Poco is an excellent text for students who have a natural aptitude for language learning. It provides many interesting exercises for developing all four skills and discusses important customs and traditions. As the students advance in their studies, the cultural explanations and the directions for the exercises are written in Spanish rather than English, and the directed oral and written exercises of the early chapters become progressively more open-ended.

This book is one of the few first-year texts that really concentrates on the development of reading proficiency and that requires students to write one -or two- page compositions as well as developing listening and speaking skills. One disappointing aspect of the book is that many of the exercises cannot be done with the books closed because they are fill-ins, matching, or multiple choice.

The Testing Program consists of nineteen chapter tests, six unit exams, and eighteen speaking test situations. The chapter tests and unit exams are very comprehensive. Students must be familiar with all aspects of the chapter or unit in order to do well and to complete the exams in the allotted time period. Students are asked to converse with each other about the topics of each chapter so that the instructor can test their communicative competence. The Activity Pack is an ancillary packet of exercises and activities that are designed to supplement those of the textbook.

It includes additional authentic readings, drawings, speaking situations, and other communicative activities. The packet also supplies a crossword puzzle that corresponds to each chapter and an answer key to each puzzle. There is a written and an oral section for each lesson that furnish additional practice in developing vocabulary and grammar usage, listening comprehension, and writing skills.

The drawings, realistic contexts and situations, and the marginal hints to the students motivate active language learning. However, the workbook and laboratory manual could be used independently by the students for supplementary practice. If students were provided with an answer key to the workbook, they could correct their own responses to most of the written exercises.

Nevertheless, the required compositions would have to be corrected either by the instructor or a lab assistant. Students could use the laboratory manual individually, because their responses to the taped oral questions are corrected or confirmed by the speaker on the master tape. Poco a Poco and the materials that accompany it are most attractive and will invite and challenge the able student to learn Spanish. Upon completion of this text, excellent students will have attained proficiency at the beginning level in all four skills.

I would recommend these materials for use in a total immersion program or for a very intensive first-year course. Trimble , with the collaboration of Claire Emilie Martin. It would be easier to evaluate this book if the authors had given some indication as to its intended use or audience. The Preface states that it is designed to provide speaking practice for the oral proficiency classroom. This is laudable, but the exercises are too diffuse to suggest a curriculum and too thin in grammar and language activities to comprise a course. Chapters are sequenced according to familiar themes, starting with describing oneself and talking about food and advancing to interpersonal relations and individual beliefs.

Each chapter has two cycles of this pattern.

The vocabulary is modeled in a short, canned dialogues and then laid out in an old-fashioned, visually dominant, two-column boldface list. Students are perhaps being sent the wrong signals about how vocabulary is learned and incorporated into useful speech. The readings chosen are immediately accessible and some -on the cocaine epidemic, the dangers of self-medication, the resurgence of Nazism among American youth- are engaging.

There is little or no guidance for actually processing a reading skimming, scanning, pulling out key topics, organizing a hierarchy of vocabulary.
